Mill Pond Project Information

The Village of Cascade would like to share an update on the Mill Pond Restoration Project and the significant progress that has been made over the past three years. This project represents a major investment in the long-term health of Nichols Creek, improved wildlife habitat, and enhanced public green space for our community.

Initial discussions on the future of the Mill Pond began in early 2023. Following public meetings and mailed community surveys, the Village Board approved moving forward with a plan to remove the existing dam, restore Nichols Creek, and establish a disconnected wildlife pond. This approach reflects resident priorities and aligns with state environmental guidance.

Over the past two years, the Village has partnered with Milwaukee Riverkeeper, Stantec, and state and federal agencies to complete engineering studies, sediment testing, groundwater monitoring, and design development. Environmental testing showed no major concerns, allowing the project to move forward responsibly.

The project has secured significant grant funding from the Fund for Lake Michigan, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Additional construction-related grants are pending. These grants completely eliminate construction costs and reduce the long-term financial obligation of local taxpayers.

In February 2026, the Village submitted the required WDNR dam abandonment permit. Pending final approvals and funding, pond drawdown could begin as early as August 2026, with construction occurring during the following summer, allowing for the time needed to allow the sediment to dry. During this phase the pond will be unusable. The final design includes a wildlife pond that supports birds, amphibians, and pollinators while maintaining the health of Nichols Creek.

The Village Board will continue to keep residents informed as the project progresses
